The project
This brick home sits on a wooded lot above Lake Minnetonka, with a long hip roof you can see from every side of the house and from the water. Mitch called Paris Painting about his exterior trim. During the estimate our team found hail damage across the old cedar shake roof, so Paris Home Exteriors stepped in to handle the roof replacement and the insurance claim, and both teams worked the project as one.
We tore the cedar off to the deck, installed new ice-and-water barrier and underlayment, and laid Brava composite tile across the whole roof, garage wing and dormers included. Brava is a polymer tile made in Iowa with the texture of hand-split shake, a Class 4 impact rating and a 50-year warranty, at a fraction of the weight of slate, so the structure needed no changes. New 6-inch Norandex gutters with Leaf Relief guards, metal soffit and fascia, and a new skylight finished the roofline. Then Paris Painting came in behind the roofers for the soffits, trim, bay windows and chimney.
"Between the internal teams that helped coordinate the different trades and timing of them, we didn't lose any days within the project itself. We wrapped up the roofing first, then painting came in to paint the soffits. I appreciated the teams at Paris all along. They've been great to work with."Mitch, Wayzata homeowner. Watch his story.
Built for hailClass 4 impact rating, the highest there is. Brava tile does not crack, curl or shed granules the way asphalt does, so a Lake Minnetonka hailstorm is not a new roof.
The look of shake or slateEvery tile is molded with the texture of hand-split cedar or quarried slate, in colors that are cast through the tile rather than coated on, so they do not fade to a flat grey.
Lighter than it looksBrava weighs about a third of real slate and needs no extra framing, which kept this project to a tear-off and install, not a structural job. 50-year limited warranty.
